Precast concrete pile caps and traffic barriers: Reinforced Earth manufactured precast concrete pile caps and traffic barriers for the Windsor Bridge Replacement Project in New South Wales.

The project aimed to help improve traffic flow and provide a reliable and safe crossing of the Hawkesbury River in Sydney’s northwest and was funded by Transport for New South Wales.

The new bridge, with two lanes southbound and one northbound is used by up to 19,000 vehicles every day and complements upgraded intersections on both sides of the Hawkesbury River and is located 35 metres downstream of the original Windsor Bridge. The new structure is a 156.6 metre-long, five span bridge.

Precast Bridge Elements

Reinforced Earth manufactured four precast concrete pile caps for the bridge, made of reinforced precast concrete and designed to accommodate specific loading conditions. RECO also manufactured 216 precast concrete traffic barriers for the bridge. While designed and manufactured for Windsor Bridge in this project, these precast solutions can be utilised on any structure where pile caps are required.

Originally built for horse-drawn vehicles and foot traffic in 1874, the original Windsor Bridge structure had deteriorated and reached the end of its useful life; no longer meeting current road design standards.

The construction of the new Windsor Bridge is complete and was opened to traffic in May 2020. The final traffic configurations was completed in December 2020.
