About Geosynthetic Turf Reinforcement Mats for Erosion Control
Turf reinforcement mats are synthetic mats designed to prevent soil erosion on steep slopes and in drainage areas, while also promoting vegetation growth. As plants grow, their roots penetrate the mat, becoming entangled within it. This integration helps to further stabilise the soil and reinforce the vegetation, making it resilient against storms and high flow velocities. Due to their synthetic composition, these erosion control mats are a permanent solution, offering durability and long life.
As outlined, geosynthetic turf reinforcement mats, such as TerraGreen™ are ideal for high-velocity or critical slope applications. In contrast, erosion control blankets are biodegradable and typically used temporarily to establish vegetation. Compared to Rip Rap, erosional control mats provide a more aesthetically pleasing outcome and are usually easier to install, often without the need for heavy machinery.
