Our debris flow and shallow landslide protection barriers are flexible-net systems used to retain debris and facilitate dewatering; thereby minimising the risk posed by heavy rainfalls for landslides and forceful debris flows.

The nets and shallow landslide barriers offer a cost-effective option to protect against landslides and debris flows. The are easy to install, have low maintenance costs and their durability ensures a long lifespan.

Debris flow nets combine many characteristics from rockfall catchment fences and debris flow barriers. They have the general appearance of a traditional hinged rockfall catchment fence but have much more robust posts and tighter posts spacing. This is because the landslide events tend to have low impact velocities but high static loading requirements.

Shallow landslide barriers

Shallow landslide barriers are made from high-tensile steel wire mesh that absorb both high dynamic and high static pressure simultaneously. The flexible-net barriers mitigate small, surficial landslides

Importantly, our shallow landslide barriers and debris flow flexible-net systems are designed uniquely for each project, based on highly variable site-specific parameters that greatly impact design requirements.

Design parameters

Each system is designed based on detailed input from our field engineers, who are located Australia-wide. They assess factors such as material properties, site geometry and potential debris flow scenarios. This personalised, professional evaluation, on a site-to-site basis, ensures a technically correct solution and safe system.

Some of the major design parameters we consider include the following:

Site Characteristics

Dynamic Distributed Load

Event Characteristics

Dynamic Puncture Load

Static Load (Filled Barrier)

Contact our protection specialist, Ignacio Hirthe, or your local Reinforced Earth Australia office for more information on our debris flow barriers and protection solutions.
